Vietnamese in Champasak (Laos): Preserving Culture, Strengthening Bonds

During the meeting, Dong Cong Dung, chairman of the Vietnamese Association of Champasak Province, reported on the association’s formation and development since 1978. The Vietnamese community in the province is now in its fourth and fifth generations, with approximately 4,780 individuals across 1,100 households. Community members have established stable lives, integrated well into the local society, preserved their cultural heritage, complied with Lao laws, and remained deeply connected to their homeland.

The association works closely with the Consulate General of Vietnam in Pakse and the Lao Front for National Construction in Champasak Province. It organizes significant community activities such as the national flag-raising ceremony on Lunar New Year's Day and celebrations of major Vietnamese and Lao national holidays. Additionally, the association supports expatriates in stabilizing their lives, handling legal procedures, registering businesses, and assisting disadvantaged families.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Tam expressed his pleasure at the strong unity of the Vietnamese community in Champasak. He emphasized that the Party and the State of Vietnam always consider overseas Vietnamese an inseparable part of the nation. The ambassador encouraged the association to continue supporting the community, strengthening solidarity and mutual assistance while contributing to the socio-economic development of the province and the Vietnam-Laos friendship.

The Vietnamese Embassy and Consulate General in Pakse reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the community and facilitating the association’s role as a bridge to strengthen Vietnam-Laos relations further.
On the same day, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Tam and the delegation visited the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Primary School. This private school operates under the management of the Vietnamese Association of Champasak Province and follows the professional guidance of the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports.
According to Chairman Dong Cong Dung, the school has 15 classrooms, over 380 students, and 18 teachers, with Lao students accounting for 70% of enrollment. As part of Vietnamese language education, students receive six Vietnamese lessons per week. Additionally, they participate in extracurricular activities in Vietnam, learn about the country and its people, and sing songs honoring President Ho Chi Minh and the special Vietnam-Laos friendship.
