What does Gen Z expect from an energy drink?

Gen Z seeks products without preservatives, something that boosts energy while still being responsible toward both their bodies and the environment. According to Nielsen, 70 percent of Vietnamese consumers say no to preservatives, and 8 out of 10 are willing to pay more for preservative free products. Most of them belong to Gen Y and Gen Z, generations that prioritize health and sustainability.

“I used to drink energy drinks just to stay awake. But after learning that Number 1 has no preservatives, I feel more at ease knowing I’m fueling my body the right way,” said Dang Linh, 27, a designer in Ho Chi Minh City.

For him, “energy” is not only for productivity but also for living fully, staying passionate, and living consciously. That has been the spirit Number 1 has followed for more than 20 years.

Why doesn’t Number 1 need preservatives?

Behind each bottle of Number 1 is a two decade journey rooted in one belief: “Nothing is impossible.”

In 2006, when Vietnam’s beverage industry still relied heavily on hot fill technology, Number 1 made a bold move by investing hundreds of millions of USD to bring in the Aseptic cold fill technology from global giant GEA. This technology is considered one of the biggest breakthroughs in the beverage world.

Aseptic is a game changer thanks to its cold fill method and absolute sterility across the entire process: bottles, caps, liquid, and environment. This allows Number 1 to keep flavor and nutrients intact without using preservatives.

Vincent Mauer, General Manager of GEA Vietnam and the Philippines, emphasized, “This method preserves nutritional value and flavor better than traditional pasteurization. It extends shelf life without preservatives and keeps quality stable to meet consumer preferences.”

For Number 1, Aseptic is not just the technology that enables preservative free drinks, but also a commitment to sustainable living.

According to Mauer, each seventh generation Aseptic production line can reduce water consumption by up to 91 percent. As a result, GEA customers like Number 1 save 97,500 cubic meters of water per year, equivalent to the annual water usage of 2,100 people.

“GEA focuses on reducing PET usage as much as possible, and this is where we can make the biggest impact,” he added.

He pointed out that in Vietnam, with seventh generation Aseptic technology, Number 1 has reduced bottle weight by 50 percent, from 27 grams to 13.5 grams, cutting CO2 emissions by 20 percent per bottle.

“I film vlogs all night and drink a lot, so knowing that Number 1 has no preservatives makes me feel safe. It gives me instant energy with a strong but smooth taste, and helps me stay focused. That’s why I choose Number 1,” said Le Minh Quan (28, content creator, Dong Nai).
