This was a distinguished diplomatic and community event, bringing together senior leaders, local authorities, Japanese friends, and more than 50,000 overseas Vietnamese who live, study, and work across the Kyushu region.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Quang Phuong highlighted Vietnam’s remarkable journey over the past 80 years, from overcoming immense challenges to emerging as one of the world’s top 35 economies, with a trade volume ranking among the top 20 globally. He noted that Vietnam has signed 17 free trade agreements, established diplomatic relations with 194 countries, and is steadfastly pursuing its goal of becoming a high-income, developed nation by 2045.

He affirmed: “Throughout this journey, the companionship of Japan, a trusted and close friend, has been indispensable. Since 2023, Vietnam and Japan have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the world, laying a new foundation for deeper and more substantive cooperation.”
Diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan were established in September 1973, marking 52 years of enduring partnership. Building on this foundation, the two countries have become strategic partners, engaging across a wide range of sectors including politics, economics, culture, education, and science and technology. Today, their collaboration is expanding into emerging fields such as digital transformation, green growth, and innovation.
Speaking at the event, Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, Vu Chi Mai, reflected on the 15-year journey of the Consulate General’s establishment and development in the region.
According to 2025 data, Vietnam ranks second among foreign markets prioritized by Fukuoka-based businesses for expanded cooperation. In the first quarter of this year, exports from Vietnam to Japan exceeded USD 6.3 billion, an increase of over 12%, underscoring the strength and trust in bilateral economic ties.
The launch of a direct flight from Vietnam to Hiroshima in May 2024 has not only shortened the geographical distance but also enhanced connectivity between people and enterprises, opening new avenues for investment, tourism, and cultural and educational exchange between Vietnam and the Chugoku region. Efforts are currently underway to promote the opening of a direct flight to Okinawa.

Since its establishment in 2009, the Vietnamese Consulate General in Fukuoka has consistently worked to connect the community, safeguard the interests of Vietnamese nationals, and foster cooperation in trade, investment, labor, culture, and education between Vietnam and the Kyushu region. These achievements have been made possible thanks to the invaluable support and partnership of the Japanese government and local friends.
As a bridge between nations, the Consulate General has played a vital role in bringing the image of Vietnam closer to the Japanese people, while nurturing the sense of belonging and national pride among overseas Vietnamese.
Speaking on behalf of the local government, Fukuoka Governor Hattori Seitaro remarked: “Fukuoka has served as Japan’s gateway to Asia since the 17th century. The love story between Princess Ngoc Hoa and merchant Araki Sotaro remains a powerful symbol of the enduring bond between our peoples. Today, Fukuoka is eager to continue partnering with Vietnam in emerging fields such as high technology, semiconductors, and smart agriculture.”
During the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day and the 15th anniversary of the Consulate General’s founding in Fukuoka, certificates of merit and commemorative medals were awarded to groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to strengthening bilateral ties, supporting the Vietnamese community, and advancing Vietnam–Japan cooperation.
Representatives of the overseas Vietnamese community expressed heartfelt pride in their contributions to the homeland and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving Vietnamese identity, language, and cultural traditions while living in Japan.
