On January 25, representatives of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Australian Embassy and the Vietnam's Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) visited Quang Nam province to meet with people affected by the natural disasters that struck the region in October 2020.

MOLISA Vice Minister Nguyen Thi Ha, UNICEF Representative Rana Flowers and David Gottlieb, Acting Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy met with children and their families in Nam Tra My district to express sympathy for their loss. They also listened to people share about their situation and how the humanitarian response made an impact in their lives.

Ho Thi Thuy and her three children suffered from severe psychological distress due to the traumatic incident. Thuy received psychological support from the local social worker who helped her overcome the stress. “I am grateful for her support. This helped me get back to a normal life”, Thuy shared with the delegation.

UNICEF has provided mental health and psychosocial support in communities affected by the natural disasters, targeting particularly children and parents. UNICEF supported the training of facilitators on the frontline to provide psychosocial first aid (PFA) and implement case management to identify needs of affected children and refer to necessary services.

The delegation met with Ho Van Dong, who has grieved for the lost of this wife and his youngest child in the storm. His house collapsed, he and his other two children (5 and 3 years old) are now taking shelter in a satellite primary school together with other families in the same situation. His family has received life-saving support to overcome the difficulties such as food, clean water, clothes as well as psychological support while their house is being rebuilt. “I will continue to work on the farm to earn a living for my two children”, Dong shared.

Australia has provided AUD 1 million (USD 775,000) for humanitarian support to people suffering due to the severe flooding in central Vietnam province of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri và Quang Nam.

The grant, contributing to the local ongoing relief efforts in Vietnam’s central provinces, will be allotted by the humanitarian partners of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) that are already working to support affected communities on the ground, including UNICEF and non-government organizations World Vision, ADRA and CARE. The group will work closely with local authorities in the project areas to improve access to clean water, promote sanitation behavior, strengthen protection mechanisms for beneficiaries and relief workers, and facilitate livelihood restoration for more than 25,000 people./.
