On July 31, Lein Riches, an Australian tourist, posted a call for help in an expat community group, sharing that his daughter had accidentally lost her engagement ring at Cua Dai Beach (Hoi An Dong Ward, Da Nang City). The post quickly gained attention and was widely shared across social media.
With a desire to help the tourist, Phan Thanh Trinh, an officer from the Beach Order Management Team under the Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourism Beaches Management Board, proactively reached out to Mr. Riches. He also enlisted the help of his colleague, Pham Nhu Dong (35), who lives in the same An Hai Ward.
On the morning of August 1, the two men used their free time outside of working hours to search the beach with a specialized metal detector. Despite the scorching heat and the vast search area, they persevered. After hours of effort, they finally discovered the ring buried deep beneath the sand near the shoreline.

Witnessing the entire search effort, Lein Riches broke down in tears upon being reunited with the ring. He hugged Trinh tightly and called him a “hero.” The tourist shared that the ring, worth over USD 2,000 (more than VND 52 million), held deep sentimental value for his family. Trinh declined any monetary reward, accepting only the heartfelt hug and words of gratitude.
Following the incident, Lein Riches posted a message of thanks in an expat community group, writing: “I just want to thank everyone on this site for making our Vietnam holiday perfect. A few nights ago, my daughter and I were at the beach late into the night, going over all the wrongs and rights of our family life. It was sad and happy for all the right reasons. Until she realised her engagement ring was gone. The next day, I reached out to you, and a wonderful man named Phinh Thanh Trang came to save the day.
I had searched for hours the day before from sunrise. I had to give up due to exhaustion. Then came our hero.
He was searching for ages, and I waited and watched with anticipation. He pulled all manner of things up until… he found it. What a bloody legend. He would not accept payment. He did cop a few kisses from me and a couple of tears on his shoulder. This country and its people are just wonderful. Thank you Phinh Thanh Trang! Thank you, Vietnam.”
The post quickly drew widespread attention and positive reactions from the international online community. Many group members expressed admiration for the responsibility and kindness shown by Da Nang’s beach management staff. Vietnamese readers also left messages of gratitude, saying the noble actions of the two officers helped spread the image of a compassionate and humane Da Nang.
One commenter wrote: “Tourists come to Da Nang not just for its beautiful scenery, but because the people here are always warm, dedicated, and professional. Acts like this are the reason Da Nang is such a beloved destination.”
