Lunar New Celebrations Introduces Vietnamese Traditional Customs in Australia

The Association of Vietnamese Mothers in Australia has held a get-together to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Tet) for families at Sunshine District, Victoria, where there are many Vietnamese residents. Families here have contributed to building a playground imbued with Vietnamese cultural traditions.

At the Lunar New Year Get-together, families enjoy folk songs, children play folk games such as tug of war, sack dance.

The children were delighted to receive books and stories in Vietnamese given by Nguyen Tu Huyen, the wife of the Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia.

The lion dance performed by children in the Vietnamese community in Melbourne created a vibrant atmosphere, and attracted the attention not only of the families participating in the event but also of other Australians in the park.

The Tet program of Vietnamese families in Melbourne is one of many meaningful community-connecting events organized by the Association of Vietnamese Mothers in Australia every year since 2015.

For overseas Vietnamese, the event is an opportunity to gather together, share about work and life. This is also an opportunity to help Vietnamese children, especially the generation born and raised in Australia, have the opportunity to better understand the identity and traditions of Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Deputy Ambassador to Australia Pham Thi Thuy Nga emphasized the meaning of connecting and spreading love from community activities of the Association of Vietnamese Mothers in Australia over the years; especially during Covid-19.

Pham Thi Thuy Nga said that the Vietnamese Embassy in Australia will continue to accompany and support the Association's activities to maintain traditional cultural values for Vietnamese people in Australia, focusing on teaching Vietnamese to generations born and raised in Australia.

Pham Thi Thuy Nga presented a certificate of merit from Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Nguyen Tat Thanh to a group of Vietnamese mothers who have made outstanding contributions in supporting, connecting the community and maintaining Vietnamese culture over the years.

Nguyen Bao Chau, head of the Association appreciated the attention and attendance of the Vietnamese Embassy in Australia along with Vietnamese families among the 18,000 members of the Association.

On behalf of the Association to receive the certificate of merit from the Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia, Chau said that this will be a great source of encouragement and motivation for the Association to maintain its activities.

Although it is not easy, Chau said that the Association will try to expand Vietnamese language classes, contributing to preserving the Vietnamese language in Australia.

The Association's meeting became more meaningful when Pham Thi Thuy Nga conveyed the message of the Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia to families in Australia: consider the Embassy as your home, and the Embassy is always open to welcome families, ready to assist when needed.
