Speaking at the press conference, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh said that, as of now, only 2 days, 20 hours and 40 minutes remain, or in other words, just 68 hours and 40 minutes before the official start of election day for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term.

The election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term takes place right after the 14th National Congress of the Party and in the year marking the 80th anniversary of the first general election that elected the National Assembly of Vietnam.
The Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly affirmed that this is an event of particularly important political significance, marking the continuation of the democratic institutional process in which voters nationwide exercise their rights and responsibilities as the masters of the country, directly selecting and electing representatives who possess the necessary qualities, capacity and prestige to represent the will, aspirations and legitimate interests of the people. At the same time, it contributes to building and perfecting the socialist rule-of-law state of the people, by the people and for the people; strengthening the great national unity bloc; reinforcing public trust in the Party and the State; and joining hands to promote rapid and sustainable national development in the new era of national advancement.
In preparation for this major national event, agencies across the political system, from the central to local levels, have closely followed the leadership and direction of the Party and the National Election Council. They have actively and urgently implemented comprehensive preparations for the election, ensuring democracy, equality, compliance with regulations, safety and thrift.
“As of now, the final tasks to best prepare for election day are still being urgently implemented by election organizations nationwide. In particular, communication and information work has been rich in content and diverse in form, spreading widely throughout society and reaching all segments of the population, making a significant contribution to this major political event of the country,” Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh affirmed, while also expressing gratitude to press agencies for their extensive and comprehensive coverage of the election, helping to create a positive, confident and optimistic atmosphere among voters nationwide and contributing to the successful organization of the election.

Reporting briefly on the implementation of preparations for the upcoming election day, Ta Thi Yen, Deputy Head of the National Assembly’s Committee for Deputy Affairs and Deputy Chief of the Standing Office of the National Election Council, stated that with just over two days remaining until election day, preparations have been implemented in a synchronized and thorough manner by the National Election Council together with central and local agencies, in accordance with legal regulations and on schedule. Many important steps in the election process have been completed ahead of the statutory deadlines.
At the central level, the National Election Council has organized two nationwide online conferences to implement election work, two online training conferences on election software and four meetings to direct and manage the implementation process. Relevant agencies have issued all 27 out of 27 guiding documents on election work as assigned by the National Election Council.
The National Election Council and its subcommittees have also issued 31 resolutions, eight plans and 46 documents providing guidance and answers related to election organization and early voting, thereby promptly addressing difficulties and obstacles arising during implementation.
Through three rounds of inspection and supervision in 34 provinces and cities, it was found that local authorities had proactively issued 6,636 leadership and directive documents serving election work, demonstrating the coordinated participation of the entire political system. The establishment of election organizations has been carried out in accordance with legal regulations. Localities have completed the establishment of election organizations with the required composition, number and deadlines stipulated by law.
So far, the country has established 34 provincial-level election committees, 3,320 commune-level election committees, 182 election boards for National Assembly deputies, 724 election boards for provincial-level People’s Council deputies, 22,401 election boards for commune-level People’s Council deputies and 72,191 voting teams. The full establishment of election organizations serves as an important basis to ensure that the election is conducted lawfully, uniformly and effectively nationwide.
Ta Thi Yen affirmed that personnel preparation has been carried out carefully to ensure the structure required by regulations.

For the 16th National Assembly, the total number of deputies to be elected is 500, with 864 candidates, corresponding to a ratio of 1.73 candidates for each seat, including four self-nominated candidates. The structure of candidates generally meets the orientation for social representation, including 45.37 percent women, 21.64 percent under 40 years old, 21.76 percent ethnic minorities, 7.41 percent non-Party members and 27.31 percent re-elected deputies.
For provincial-level People’s Councils, the total number of deputies to be elected is 2,552, with 4,217 candidates, equivalent to a ratio of 1.65 candidates per seat. For commune-level People’s Councils, the total number of deputies to be elected is 72,611, with 120,873 candidates, equivalent to a ratio of 1.66 candidates per seat.
“These figures show that the official list of candidates ensures the surplus ratio required by law while also paying attention to a reasonable structure among female candidates, young candidates and candidates from ethnic minority groups,” the Deputy Head of the National Assembly’s Committee for Deputy Affairs said.
As of March 10, 2026, the country has 78,928,647 voters who will cast ballots at 72,195 polling stations. The voter lists have been publicly posted since February 3, 2026 for people to review and verify in accordance with legal regulations. The number of voters will continue to be updated by localities until 24 hours before voting begins.
Immediately after the announcement of the official list of candidates, localities simultaneously issued plans to organize voter meetings so that candidates could present their action programs. Relevant forces have also developed and implemented plans to ensure security and order for the election nationwide, proactively preventing and promptly addressing any arising situations.
The National Election Council has allowed 217 polling stations in 11 provinces and cities to organize early voting. As of March 12, 2026, early voting has taken place at 34 polling stations in four localities, including An Giang, Khanh Hoa and Ho Chi Minh City. The organization of early voting in these polling stations has been conducted in accordance with legal regulations.
“As of now, preparations for election day on March 15, 2026 have basically been completed, ensuring compliance with the schedule and legal regulations. With the active preparation of authorities at all levels and the response of voters and the public, we believe that election day on March 15 will truly become a nationwide festival, conducted democratically, safely, lawfully and successfully,” Ta Thi Yen emphasized.
