On September 7 and 8, Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Phan Minh Giang paid a working visit to Palmerston North. Located adjacent to the capital Wellington, the city holds great potential for cooperation in education, training, development of high-quality human resources, energy, high-tech agriculture, the application of advanced technological solutions in crop and livestock care, and food security assurance.

During the visit, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang paid a courtesy call on and held talks with Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith. At the meeting, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang provided updates on Vietnam’s socio-economic development, emphasizing the country’s efforts to pursue its two centennial goals with the aspiration of building Vietnam into a strong, prosperous, and happy nation.
The Ambassador expressed confidence in the support of New Zealand in general, and Palmerston North in particular, in contributing to joint efforts to effectively implement the Vietnam-New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, thereby bringing greater tangible benefits to the peoples and businesses of both countries.
Ambassador Phan Minh Giang highly valued the potential and strengths of Palmerston North, which can complement and align with Vietnam’s development cooperation needs, particularly in the fields of science and technology, innovation, green transition, and high-quality agriculture.
At the same time, the Ambassador proposed promoting exchanges and cooperation, as well as studying the establishment of partnership relations between Palmerston North and provinces, cities, and localities in Vietnam.
On this occasion, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang expressed his gratitude and requested Mayor Grant Smith’s continued support and attention to the Vietnamese community living in Palmerston North.

Mayor Grant Smith emphasized the growing importance of Vietnam in the region and commended the country’s socio-economic achievements over the years.
The Mayor affirmed that Palmerston North will continue to closely coordinate with the Embassy of Vietnam in New Zealand to make effective contributions to the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, while also remaining ready to further strengthen cooperation with Vietnamese localities in the time ahead.
As part of the visit, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang also visited and held working sessions with several educational institutions and applied research centers in Palmerston North. Earlier, the Ambassador met with members of the Vietnamese community currently living, working, and studying in the city.
