The Legion of Honour was awarded in recognition of the exceptional contributions made by Professors Jean Tran Thanh Van and Le Kim Ngoc, both 91 years old. The decoration reflects France’s deep appreciation for their tireless efforts in promoting bilateral scientific cooperation. Over the decades, the two professors have devoted their lives to the advancement of science while strengthening academic ties between France and Vietnam, as well as connecting Vietnam with the global scientific community.

A highlight of their distinguished careers is the initiative to establish the annual Rencontres du Vietnam (Meet Vietnam) conferences, launched in 1993. As a Vietnamese-born physicist with a long academic career in France, Professor Jean Tran Thanh Van drew upon his extensive network of French universities, research institutes, and scientists to bring numerous French scholars to Vietnam to participate in these meetings.

Rencontres du Vietnam quickly evolved into a prestigious forum gathering leading international scientists from a wide range of disciplines, from fundamental sciences such as physics, mathematics, and astronomy, to applied sciences and the humanities. Through this initiative, Professors Jean Tran Thanh Van and Le Kim Ngoc not only helped affirm Vietnam’s scientific standing on the world map but also expanded the influence of French science in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The conference has also created opportunities for young Vietnamese researchers to access advanced scientific knowledge and research methodologies from France.

All proceeds from the conferences were reinvested to establish the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhơn in 2013. The ICISE has since become a prominent venue for scientific conferences, attracting many Nobel laureates and Fields Medal winners. Beyond being a hub of intellectual exchange, the center also focuses on promoting scientific culture among the public and inspiring young Vietnamese to pursue scientific research.

Speaking at the ceremony, French Ambassador Olivier Brochet stated: “The Legion of Honour is France’s recognition of the remarkable research achievements and outstanding contributions of the two professors to the development of science. The creation of ICISE is a vivid testament to the friendship and scientific cooperation between France and Vietnam.”

Beyond their scientific endeavors, Professors Jean Tran Thanh Van and Le Kim Ngoc have also been active in humanitarian work. In 1970, they founded the association Aide à l’Enfance du Vietnam (Aid to the Children of Vietnam) and contributed to the establishment of the first SOS Children’s Village in Vietnam, providing a loving home for many orphans.

In her remarks, Professor Le Kim Ngoc expressed that the honor was not only for the two of them but also for all those who have accompanied them over the years. She emphasized the special significance of receiving the decoration during the France-Vietnam Year of Innovation. The professor affirmed that the award gives them renewed strength to continue pursuing their beliefs and core values. The two professors also encouraged young people to stay confident in their dreams, dare to assert themselves, and remain true to their identity.
