The predecessor of the United Nations, the League of Nations, was established in January 1920 with its headquarters in Geneva on the basis of the Treaty of Versailles (signed in 1919) to develop friendly cooperation and ensure peace and security for the United Nations. Multilateral diplomacy began to take shape with the founding of The League of Nations.

After the United Nations was established (October 24, 1945), Geneva became the second headquarters of the United Nations in Europe, in addition to the headquarters located in New York, USA. The Library and Archives of the League of Nations became the United Nations Library and Archives in Geneva.

Over the past 100 years, multilateralism has evolved from the beginnings of the League of Nations in Geneva into a system of in-depth and comprehensive multilateral cooperation in many fields within and outside the UN framework, with many specialized international organizations.

Geneva is an important global center for multilateralism, housing the headquarters of the United Nations Office for Europe and more than 30 international intergovernmental organizations in specialized fields, promoting multilateral cooperation between countries ranging from human rights, humanitarian assistance, disarmament, labor, health, trade and development, intellectual property, telecommunications, hydrometeorology, measurement standards, etc.

The Covid-19 pandemic has put pressure on multilateralism, but meetings of members of the United Nations and other international organizations have quickly shifted to online formats and then combined with face-to-face meetings, multilateral diplomatic activities are uninterrupted.

Immediately after the pandemic restrictions were lifted, the UN Office in Geneva organized many activities together with state members, and other partners, including NGOs and regional organizations. and at the same time opened the exhibition of historical documents and artifacts commemorating the 100th anniversary of multilateralism.

The UN Library in Geneva, the largest library of the UN, organizes this exhibition (September 20-October 28, 2022) with the aim of introducing diplomats in Geneva and the public to the development of the UN. multilateralism in various fields from the League of Nations era to the present-day work of the United Nations. This library provides information to the Secretariat and serves the public and scientists around the world.

The documents and artifacts on display have historical significance, such as the 2019 Treaty of Versailles, the Nansen passport from 1922-1938 as a travel document for refugees, the text of the Convention on Slavery which was made in Geneva in 1926, the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and so on.

45 years ago, on September 20, 1977, Vietnam became the 149th member of the United Nations. Vietnam has always supported and promoted multilateralism. On this occasion, the Vietnamese Delegation to Geneva organized a visit to the 100th Anniversary Exhibition of Multilateralism in Geneva, demonstrating Vietnam's strong commitment and active efforts to uphold and promote multilateralism.

Geneva is also the place where Vietnam actively and persistently promoted diplomacy for peace from the very beginning of its independence, through the Geneva Conference in 1954 on the re-establishment of peace in Indochina, with successful results. to the signing of 3 Geneva Agreements in 1954 on ending the war and re-establishing peace in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

The signing of these Geneva Agreements marks an important milestone in the revolutionary history as well as the diplomatic history of Vietnam, and at the same time expresses Vietnam's aspiration for a peace associated with independence, unity and totality territorial integrity.

In the 45 years since joining the UN, from a less developed country, Vietnam has become a low-middle-income country, becoming a responsible partner, taking on many responsibilities, and making real contributions to the quality and effectiveness for the United Nations, the largest multilateral organization on the planet, to realize most of the Millennium Development Goals, especially in terms of poverty reduction, gender equality, health and education.

This year's exhibition of historical documents and artifacts at the UN Library in Geneva helps connect the public with current global issues. This is also an opportunity for the UN and its member states to promote peacekeeping through multilateralism, review the lessons of the past as we look to the future.
