Vietnam Advocates Budget Approval for Peacekeeping Mission in Abyei

This year’s conference was held in a special context, marking 80 years since the first and only use of atomic bombs in human history, an event that caused devastating consequences for humanity. The event brought together 222 delegates from 15 countries and territories, representing 46 non-governmental organizations, three international/regional organizations, six representatives of international and national government agencies, and four representatives from national and European parliaments.

At the Conference’s opening ceremony, Duong Thi Nga, Deputy Secretary-General of the Vietnam Peace Committee, presented the Message of Solidarity from President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Luong Cuong to the Organizing Committee and participating delegates, to the survivors of the atomic bombings (Hibakusha), and to all peace-loving people around the world.

In the message, the President expressed the deep solidarity of the Vietnamese State and people, and highly appreciated the pioneering role of Japanese and international peace organizations in their tireless efforts to advocate for the elimination of nuclear weapons and the promotion of sustainable global peace.

Additionally, a Message of Peace and Congratulations from President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations Phan Anh Son was sent to the Conference, expressing the strong support of the Vietnamese people for the anti-nuclear weapons movement. The message also reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to international cooperation for a peaceful, safe, and just world for all.

Speaking at the International Forum held within the framework of the Conference, Duong Thi Nga emphasized that Vietnam deeply understands the value of peace and firmly opposes all forms of weapons of mass destruction. She called on the international community to strengthen efforts toward the full implementation of international disarmament treaties, including the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), while underscoring the vital role of grassroots movements in building sustainable peace.

Also at the Conference, Pham Xuan Hung, a representative of the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA), shared Vietnam’s ongoing struggle to seek justice for Agent Orange victims. He also expressed solidarity and empathy with Japanese atomic bomb survivors - the Hibakusha.

The presence and voices of Vietnam’s people’s organizations at the Conference reflect the profound international solidarity of the Vietnamese people with the people of Japan and the world. It also contributes to spreading the message of peace, opposing war, and advocating for a future free of nuclear weapons. The awarding of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) demonstrates global recognition and support for efforts to realize a nuclear-free future.

The Conference will continue with discussion sessions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki until August 9, 2025.
