A cold spell is forecasted to hit the country's northern region on September 18, bringing heavy rains and lowering temperatures.

Before the arrival of the cold spell, the region will experience hot weather, with temperatures from 31-34C, from August 14-17. The temperature will then drop by 3-4C, meteorologists said.

Accuweather said temperatures in Hanoi would stand at 24-32C on September 18 and 25-30C in the following days.

Areas located at 1.500m above the sea level like Sa Pa in Lao Cai province and Sin Ho in Lai Chau province will experience temperatures from 17-24C in the next four days, and 17-19C on September 19.

Meanwhile, in the central region, temperatures will hover around 27-35C in Vinh city, Nghe An province, and 26-36C in Da Nang city, from now till September 18.

A low tropical depression is forecast to trigger rains in the region, and it would develop into a storm, directly affecting northern and central localities, meteorologists said.

Heavy rains will continue to pound the Central Highlands and southern regions in the evening and at night from September 14-16, with temperatures in HCM City from 25-31C, and Buon Ma Thuot city in Dak Lak province, 22-31C.

Director of the National Centre for Hydro-meteorology Forecasting Mai Van Khiem said from the second-haft of this month to the end of the year, there would be around six to eight storms and low tropical depressions in South China Sea (Bien Dong Sea). Of which, around four to five storms would impact the mainland of the central and southern regions.

Rainfall in Vi Xuyen (Ha Giang), Dai Tu (Thai Nguyen), Phuc Yen (Vinh Phuc) and Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc) exceeded 100mm on September 12-13.

One of the victims is an eighth grader in Viet Quang town, Bac Quang district, the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang, whose house was buried by landslides on September 13.

The other is a 33-year-old man in Lien Hoa commune, Lap Thach district, the northern midland province of Vinh Phuc. The man was killed during the lightning the same day.
