Buddhist nun Thich Nu Gioi Tanh, head of the Vietnamese Buddhists’ Association in the Republic of Korea (RoK), was honored for her outstanding engagement in charity activities to support people hurt by Covid-19 in the RoK, reported VNA.

She was among 20 people, including artists, painters, and business leaders, named at the seventh edition of an annual event held by the Ahn Jung Geun cultural and art association (the name of a famous general in the anti-Japanese period of Korea) to recognize outstanding citizens in the RoK for their contributions in different areas, particularly arts.

Previously, in 2020, in the face of the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic, which seriously affected the economy and life of RoK's people, the organizers focused on honoring individuals who have made great contributions to the social and charitable activities to help individuals and community groups overcome difficulties.

At the 2021 honor program, the Ahn Jung Geun Association specially awarded the Volunteer Activity Award for World Peace to Vietnamese nun Thich Nu Gioi Tanh for her contributions to promoting the cultural characteristics of Vietnam in RoK, contributing to promoting cultural exchanges between the two peoples and for her charity activities for the community in recent years.

This year’s event on Nov. 10 evening in Seoul also awarded 16 scholarships to disadvantaged students affected by the pandemic.

Nun Thich Nu Gioi Tanh, the member of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Board, was also given a World Buddhist Peace Prize Award in 2019 for her great efforts to promote Vietnam’s distinctive cultural identity in the host country, boosting cultural exchange between the two countries, as well as her commitment to charity over years.

These were the big awards first held by Korean Buddhism under the sponsor of the country’s Government and National Assembly to honor foreign Buddhist dignitaries who have contributed greatly to fostering solidarity, friendship, cooperation, and development between their countries with the RoK, and to building world peace.

The nun has visited and delivered aid to Vietnamese people living in the Korean cities of Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju, Daejeon, Ulsan, and Muan. She has introduced Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelagoes during peace-praying ceremonies and requiems at Phap Mon Pagoda, the first Vietnamese pagoda in the RoK.

She dedicated most of her time this year in Vietnam to assist with the fight against Covid-19, via donations of face masks, hand sanitizers, and medical supplies. She also provided support to Truong Sa and impoverished people.

The Vietnam Buddhist Cultural Center in RoK and the Buddhist Association in June 2020 donate 20,000 masks for the Vietnamese community in Korea with the wish that everyone will be safe and soon overcome difficult days.
