On May 16, the 10th Vietnam IT Day 2023 was held in Tokyo, Japan. The event is organized by Vietnam Software & IT services (VINASA), Vietnam-Japan IT Cooperation Club (VJC) and Japan Information Technology Service Industry Association (JISA). It attracted the participation of 20 leading IT enterprises in Vietnam and nearly 150 Japanese enterprises.

Vietnam IT Day 2023 took place with three main activities - Conference, Exhibition and Business cooperation.

In particular, the topics include looking back at 10 years of development of Vietnam-Japan IT cooperation, positioning the future of the two countries' IT cooperation, training and developing human resources towards the future.

Vietnam - 2nd largest IT partner in Japanese market

Cooperation in the field of IT between Vietnam and Japan started early. It started right in the 2000s, when the software and IT services industry was newly formed and boomed in the last 10 years.

After more than 20 years, Vietnam becomes the second largest partner and is preferred by Japanese partners. Vietnamese IT enterprises also thrive in both quality and quantity.

The technological level of Vietnamese workers significantly improved, including simple stages such as coding and testing.

Up to now, Vietnamese businesses are able to participate in stages from research, design to implement digital transformation projects, and apply new technologies such as Cloud, Big Data, AI, Blockchain, VR/ XR.

The leading Vietnamese IT enterprises with over 1,000 employees are businesses such as Rikkeisoft, Luvina, Fujinet, VMO, and VTI.

Meanwhile, the total number of Vietnamese enterprises providing IT services to Japanese enterprises reached nearly 500 enterprises.

According to VINASA, Japan's fiduciary needs for software development are estimated at more than US$30 billion/year. Vietnamese enterprises currently account for about 6-7% of the market share. Therefore, the potential for cooperation is huge.

Along with the increase in operations in Japan, the IT industry in Vietnam is also experiencing strong growth in scale.

In 2022, the revenue of the ICT industry is estimated at US$148 billion, up 8.7% compared to 2021.

In the software and IT services industry alone, the revenue of US$50 million in the early 2000s increased to more than US$15 billion (in 2022), with nearly 400,000 programmers.

"We had a proud past and I believe that the future will also open up more powerful and effective cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

Together, we will create happiness for people and businesses. With data intelligence, we will immediately get what we want with just one touch," said Nguyen Van Khoa, president of VINASA.

To Khoa, VINASA recommends that Japanese partners and businesses boldly give Vietnamese ICT businesses the most difficult and challenging problems.

"With the foundation of 50 years of Vietnam-Japan relations, I believe that the potential for cooperation between the two countries is unlimited, opening a new era of cooperation for lasting development. Together, we will go global," Khoa said.

Vinasa Chairman Nguyen Van Khoa also suggested three opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to exploit, thereby improving their position on the world ICT map.

These are also three hot spots of digital transformation globally, including maintaining SAP/S4Hana or Dynamics 365 Microsoft systems, converting Cobol language to modern language and electric car engineering software.

Another opportunity is digital transformation cooperation, solving the big problems of Japan and Vietnam at the same time according to Society 5.0.

In recent years, the world implemented digital transformation level 1 - automating operations to free workers from boring jobs, increasing productivity, and optimizing profits for businesses.

According to Khoa, Vietnamese businesses have methods and resources to do digital transformation at a higher level. It is the automation of the touchpoints between consumers and businesses, people and authorities, and between businesses and businesses.

First held in 2013, Vietnam IT Day is part of a series of annual activities of VINASA and Japanese IT organizations including Vietnam IT Day (in Tokyo), SODEC Exhibition (in Tokyo), Japan ICT Day (in Vietnam), with the mission of promoting cooperation in the IT industry between the two countries.

The year 2023 marks the 10th year of the event, also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. At Vietnam IT Day 2023, the two sides oriented cooperation to focus on developing a number of key areas in digital transformation, ERP (business administration) and software for electric cars.
