The Vietnam-Sweden Children's Film Week presents a selection of classic Swedish films and restored Vietnamese animation. It aims to promote storytelling art and cultural exchange to young audiences. It also honors the legendary Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren and the generation of Vietnamese animators, including People's Artist Ngo Manh Lan - one of the leading figures and founders of Vietnamese animation, contributing to helping children discover the cinematic heritage of both countries.

“Astrid Lindgren’s characters embody core Swedish values: independence, equality, and respect for children’s voices. This film week not only introduces these stories to the younger generation in Vietnam but also reflects the long-standing cultural cooperation between the two countries, in which cinema plays an important role in connecting the two societies,” said Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Johan Ndisi.

At the event, Director of the Vietnam Film Institute Le Thi Ha, shared that one of its missions is to preserve and spread cinematic heritage, promote and exchange culture through cinema.

“This is an activity that film archives around the world aim for – and also an activity that the Vietnam Film Institute, as a member of the International Federation of Archives (FIAF) and the Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archives Association (SEAPAVAA), is committed to when joining these organizations,” said Le Thi Ha.

Many of the audience members of the screening are children. They enjoyed "Serves the Fox Right" (the first animated film of Vietnamese Revolutionary Cinema) and "Pippi Longstocking" (Sweden). These films created an atmosphere filled with joy and the colors of childhood on International Children's Day, June 1st. Through stories rich in imagination, humanistic spirit, and the yearning for freedom, Vietnamese and Swedish cinema touched the innocent emotions of children, while spreading beautiful values ​​of friendship, courage, and sharing.

There is also an exhibition space showcasing Vietnamese editions of famous works by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, published by Kim Dong Publishing House, including four comic books about Pippi: Do You Know Pippi?; Pippi Goes Shopping?; Pippi on Monkey Island; and Pippi Rescues Christmas (alongside the books The Southern Meadow and Emil).

Taking place from June 1-5, the Vietnam-Sweden Children's Film Week showcases three newly restored Swedish films: Pippi Longstocking, The Lion Brothers, and Ronja, the Bandit's Daughter, along with a collection of 11 Vietnamese animated films spanning six decades, including: Deserved Punishment for the Fox (1960), The Story of Giong (1970), The Kitten (1965), The Toad and the Frog (1993), The Miracle of Resurrection (1995), The Talking Myna (1967), and new works such as The Emperor's Journey, The Broken Feather, Neighbors, The Caterpillar Turns into a Butterfly, and The Warm Lamp.

Many Vietnamese films have won prestigious awards, such as "Kitten," which won the Silver Pelican Award at the Mamaia International Animation Film Festival (Romania) in 1966; "Kitten" and "The Talking Myna" won the Golden Lotus Award at the first Vietnam Film Festival in 1970; the film "The Story of Giong" won the Golden Dove Award at the Leipzig International Film Festival (Germany) in 1971; and the Golden Lotus Award at the second Vietnam Film Festival.
