The appointment is expected to strengthen Viet Nam’s consular representation network in Belgium, a country that plays an important role within the European Union (EU). Antwerp, in particular, is regarded as one of Europe’s leading logistics hubs and serves as an important economic gateway linking Vietnam and Europe.

For his part, Van Gestel shared that he has been attached to and cooperating with Vietnam for over 30 years in trade and shipping. He expressed his impression of Vietnam’s economic development as well as its growing role in the global supply chain.

He noted that Vietnam serves as a "gateway to Asia" with immense potential for cooperation, particularly in logistics and trade. He also highlighted the significance of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), stating that the agreement will continue to unlock numerous cooperation and investment opportunities in the coming time.

Van Gestel will serve a three-year term, overseeing the Flanders region—Belgium’s most dynamic economic hub and home to the Port of Antwerp, Europe's second-largest seaport. A Belgian national, Van Gestel has extensive experience in logistics, shipping, maritime law, and corporate governance. He has held several positions within business circles and organizations related to port activities in Antwerp, and previously served in the Belgian Navy.

Earlier this month, the Embassy of Vietnam to Belgium and Luxembourg - Mission of Vietnam to the EU, together with Chris Geyskens, Belgian Branch Director of Vietnam Association for Victoms of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Hoi An (VAVA Hoi An), organized the 13th edition of Vietnam Ambassador's Golf Cup 2026 for charity.
